Iran said U.S. forces would not be allowed in the Gulf

Published

Iran’s armed forces chief of staff—identified as Ali Abdollahi by L’Orient Today and several other reports, but as Mohammad Bagher Abdollahi by Kurdistan24—said Saturday that U.S. military vessels would not be allowed into the Persian Gulf. Iran International reported that he claimed Iran had rendered the U.S. Navy ineffective.

More context

Iranian state television carried his remarks. Reports differ on his given name: L’Orient Today and other outlets identify him as Ali Abdollahi, while Kurdistan24 gives Mohammad Bagher Abdollahi.

The remarks followed heightened U.S. and Israeli threats of strikes, according to L’Orient Today. Abdollahi said the U.S. president could only dream of sending American forces into the Gulf, and would “take that dream to his grave.” He also claimed Iran’s forces had rendered the U.S. Navy ineffective. The Times of India reported that Iran had restricted Strait of Hormuz shipping since the war began on February 28 and that Washington had imposed a counterblockade on Iranian ports.

Verifier’s note

Multiple publishers report on Oct. 24 that Iran’s armed forces chief said U.S. warships would not be allowed into the Persian Gulf. The reports support the proposed claim and are timely.
