More context

A Serbian police officer guarding the Israeli Embassy in Belgrade shot dead a knife-wielding attacker shortly after midnight Wednesday, Serbia's outgoing Interior Minister Ivica Dacic said. The suspect, whose identity had not been established and who was believed to be a minor, attacked the Gendarmerie officer with two knives while shouting “Allahu Akbar,” Dacic said. The officer had a slight facial wound, was in good condition and expected to leave hospital later Wednesday, Dacic said. Serbian authorities raised the country's terrorism alert to its highest level and ordered increased police presence and security checks at critical infrastructure and crowded public areas. Dacic said security services had monitored the suspect, whom he described as a known supporter of the Islamic State group and believed to be from Sabac. He said the suspect's Instagram profile displayed a black flag and the group's emblem.
