North Korea fired short-range ballistic missiles into eastern waters

Published

North Korea launched a barrage of ballistic missiles toward the sea off its east coast Thursday, South Korea’s military said. Its Joint Chiefs of Staff said it detected short-range missiles from near Wonsan, each traveling roughly 250 kilometers. The launches followed North Korean threats to resume border loudspeaker broadcasts and deploy new weapons.

More context

South Korea’s military said North Korea fired short-range ballistic missiles from the Wonsan area into eastern waters Thursday. South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said it detected missiles. Japan’s Defense Ministry also detected a suspected ballistic missile launch.

The launches followed North Korean threats to resume front-line propaganda loudspeaker broadcasts and deploy new weapons near the border. They also came after North Korean leader Kim Jong Un’s weekend visit to China. Tensions have risen since land mine explosions in the Demilitarized Zone on Sept. 21 injured three South Korean soldiers. A South Korean-U.N. Command investigation concluded North Korean troops planted the mines south of the Military Demarcation Line; Pyongyang denied responsibility.
