More context

Government data put the toll at 5,026 of 10,351 confirmed cases since the outbreak was declared in May. Friday's taskforce report put the fatality rate at 48.6 per cent. Authorities have yet to find a way to control what Qazinform described as the country’s deadliest Ebola epidemic on record.

Health officials also reported 77 new confirmed cases and 34 additional deaths. Eight of 26 provinces are affected; Ituri has 71 per cent of confirmed cases. Health officials said 1,101 patients were receiving care in treatment and isolation centres and 2,788 had recovered.
