Serbia’s student movement demanded Thursday that senior officials in the police, intelligence agencies and judiciary resign, following its historic election victory. More context
On Thursday, Serbia’s student movement called for senior police, intelligence and judicial officials to step down, after its election victory put it on course to take power. The Students’ List movement swept Sunday’s parliamentary election against the Serbian Progressive Party of longtime leader Aleksandar Vucic, which has ruled for 14 years. At a Belgrade news conference, the students urged election authorities to finalize the results promptly, following a rerun at about 50 polling stations scheduled for next Sunday, so a new parliament and government can be formed. They also called on public servants to prevent outgoing officials from destroying documents or evidence of possible wrongdoing. Student Filip Ubovic said, “Changes are starting now.” Vucic accused the winners of “revolutionary terror” after groups stormed the Informer TV station. The formal transfer of power is expected to take several weeks.
