More context

Monday's surveillance and body-camera release from Shelby County prosecutors captured Tennessee National Guard members training their handguns on 20-year-old shooting victim Tyrin Johnson while he was dying on a downtown Memphis sidewalk after being shot. The footage, released by the office of Shelby County District Attorney Steve Mulroy, includes a Memphis police officer calling for an ambulance and asking the Guard members whether they had a medical kit, the Associated Press reported.

According to the district attorney’s account, officers heard gunfire in downtown Memphis early July 5, 2026, and pursued Johnson with Guard members. After Johnson turned onto Union Avenue, Guard members Alyssa Hout and Dallas Jellnick fired. Authorities have said Johnson turned toward the troops with a gun; an autopsy found he was shot in the back.
